SELFDEFENCE FUNDAMENTALS
by Patrick van het Nederend
14-15 March · Somatic Hub Amsterdam
This seminar is an in-depth introduction to the core principles of the martial art Systema, not as a collection of techniques, but as a way of functioning under pressure.
Systema is not about techniques, styles, or choreography.
It is about how you function under pressure.
Rooted in old Slavic knowledge of selfdefence, movement, resilience, and human behavior, Systema is a principle-based martial art focused on restoring the body’s natural ability to respond. As emphasized by the Masters, effectiveness does not come from forcing actions or copying techniques, but from inner calm, awareness, and freedom of action.
Systema is about control.
First of yourself, then your surroundings, and only then others when necessary.
Patrick’s approach to Systema is shaped by real-world professional experience with aggression and violence, keeping the training realistic and applicable under pressure. This is why Systema is uniquely suited for self-defence in its full scope: it develops control, perception, and the ability to recover physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
Even while the situation is still unfolding.
TRAINING PRINCIPLES
CONTROLE STARTS WITH YOURSELF
Systema always begins with self-control.
Only when you can regulate your own physical, mental, and emotional state can you influence a situation or another person. Without this, actions become reactive and unsafe.
TENSION ATTRACKS TENSION
Unnecessary tension provokes resistance and escalation.
You learn how to move, position, and apply pressure without triggering defensive or aggressive reactions, creating more options and greater safety.
FIGHT TO ESCAPE, NOT TO WIN
Systema does not seek confrontation or domination.
You learn to avoid stepping into the other person’s game and instead operate on another layer: creating space, exits, and control without unnecessary engagement.
LINE WORK, TRAJECTORIES AND PLANES OF MOVEMENT
Rather than reacting to what already happened, you learn to read lines of force, intention, and direction, including trajectories and planes of movement.
By understanding how force travels through space and the body, you begin to see the next movement before it fully appears, allowing early positioning, angle changes, or disengagement.
Control comes from placement and timing, not speed or strength.
MULTIPLE TARGETS, GREATER SAFETY
The more targets you can perceive and influence with your whole body, intention and use of surroundings, the safer and more in control you become.
Systema works simultaneously on:
Physical level (balance, structure, position)
Mental level (attention, expectation, decision-making)
Psychological level (fear, stress, pain response)
The deeper your understanding of violence and human reaction, the less physical force you need. By working with expectation, off-rhythm, timing, and controlled pressure, slow or fast, you gain control without escalation.
SLOW TRAINING, DEEP LEARNING
We train slowly and precisely so the nervous system can integrate the principles. This creates real body-learning rather than intellectual understanding.
What the body learns deeply, it remembers.
Slow does not mean soft or comfortable.
Pain, fear, pressure, and perceived danger is still present, but always in a controlled and conscious way. Slowing down allows you to stay functional inside intensity.
RECOVERY WITHIN THE SITUATION
Recovery is trained inside the situation, not after it ends.
You learn to restore awareness, movement, and control while pressure is still present, an essential skill for resilience and long-term development.
TRAINING APPROACH
Principle-based, not technique-driven
Adaptive to each participant
No choreography, no performance
Learning happens through experience, not explanation
The form adapts to the person.
The principles remain the same.
